OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Targeted in Molotov Attack at SF Home, Suspect Arrested
A Molotov cocktail attack targeted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco home early Friday, ending with a suspect in custody and a wider security scare.
The incident unfolded just before dawn in the Russian Hill neighborhood, where an incendiary device ignited part of the property’s exterior, raising immediate concerns about a targeted attack.
According to ABC7 and WIRED, the device caused a small fire at the home’s gate around 3:45 to 4:12 a.m., but no injuries were reported. Police say the suspect fled the scene before being tracked down.
About an hour later, the situation escalated again.
Authorities say the same individual appeared near OpenAI’s headquarters in Mission Bay and allegedly threatened to burn down the building, prompting officers to respond and identify the suspect.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt,” an OpenAI spokesperson said, confirming the individual is now in custody.
The incident adds to a pattern of rising threats and protests tied to artificial intelligence companies, particularly as OpenAI’s influence and visibility continue to expand.
It also raises new questions about security for tech executives and corporate facilities in San Francisco.
Police have not released the suspect’s identity or a motive, and charges were still pending as of Friday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
