Pentagon Appoints Jan. 6 Defendant to Counterterrorism-Linked Role, Drawing Scrutiny
The Pentagon has appointed Elias Irizarry, a participant in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot who later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense, to a position connected to special operations and counterterrorism policy work, according to reporting confirmed by multiple news organizations.
Irizarry was 19 years old when he joined the crowd that entered restricted areas of the Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack. Court records show he later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor trespassing-related charge and served a brief jail sentence.
His new role sits within the Pentagon policy structure responsible for advising on military strategy and supporting functions tied to special operations and irregular warfare. Current and former defense officials cited by major outlets questioned whether someone with a Jan. 6 conviction should hold such a sensitive assignment.
The Pentagon has defended the appointment. Acting Pentagon Press Secretary Joel Valdez publicly described Irizarry as a “qualified, patriotic young professional.”

The controversy quickly moved beyond defense circles. Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, publicly criticized the decision and questioned whether a convicted Jan. 6 participant should be involved in sensitive national security work.
The dispute goes beyond a single personnel decision.
The Pentagon office involved works on issues that can include embassy security, hostage recovery support, irregular warfare strategy, and counterterrorism planning. Critics argue that the appointment could affect confidence in security vetting standards, while supporters point to Irizarry’s completed sentence and subsequent government service eligibility.
The story also reflects a broader political debate over how Jan. 6 convictions should affect future public service opportunities under the Trump administration.
