Pentagon Confirms 4 Dead After KC-135 Refueling Jet Crashes During Iraq Mission
A U.S. Air Force refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq during a combat mission tied to the escalating conflict with Iran, triggering an active rescue and recovery operation for the crew.
The incident unfolded during Operation Epic Fury, when two KC-135 aerial refueling tankers were operating over what U.S. Central Command described as “friendly airspace.” One aircraft went down while the second tanker managed to land safely despite damage.
Military officials said six aircrew were aboard the aircraft that crashed. According to reports citing U.S. Central Command updates, four service members have been confirmed dead while search efforts initially continued for two others.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. Some early reporting suggests a mid-air incident between the two refueling aircraft, though officials emphasized that the loss was not caused by hostile or friendly fire, leaving unanswered questions about what exactly went wrong.
“The incident occurred in friendly airspace… and rescue efforts are ongoing,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
The crash underscores the risks facing U.S. aviation units supporting operations linked to the widening conflict with Iran. KC-135 tankers are critical to long-range strike missions because they refuel fighter jets and bombers mid-air, allowing aircraft to remain in combat zones longer.

Complicating the picture, an Iran-aligned militia group known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq publicly claimed it shot down the aircraft. U.S. officials have rejected that claim and say the crash appears unrelated to enemy fire.
The Pentagon says a full investigation is underway as recovery teams continue work at the crash site and officials notify families of the fallen service members.
More details about the cause of the incident and the status of the crew are expected as the military completes its rescue and recovery operation.
