Pentagon Deploys 2,200 Marines on 3 Warships as Iran Tensions Intensify
A U.S. Marine unit with roughly 2,200 troops is being redirected to the Middle East aboard three Navy amphibious warships as tensions with Iran escalate.
The deployment is raising new questions about how far the current military campaign could expand.
According to ABC News, the force is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, normally based in Japan and operating under U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. U.S. officials told the outlet the Marines are sailing toward the region with aircraft, landing forces and other amphibious capabilities.
The ships carry equipment including F-35B fighter jets and MV-22 Osprey aircraft, giving commanders the ability to launch air operations or rapid troop landings if needed.

Officials emphasized the movement does not necessarily mean U.S. ground troops will be sent into Iran, but it gives U.S. Central Command additional flexibility if the conflict widens.
Defense officials say the redeployment comes amid increased Iranian military activity and ongoing U.S. strikes on Iranian military infrastructure.
President Donald Trump has said the campaign has already destroyed much of Iran’s missile capability, though independent confirmation of those claims has not been provided.
For now, the Marine force is positioned as a deterrent and rapid-response option as the conflict continues to unfold.
