Pentagon Eyes Major U.S. Military Reorg, Cutting Commands and Reordering Power
The Pentagon is moving toward a major reorganization of the U.S. military’s command structure that could reshape how American forces are led and deployed, according to The Washington Post. The effort, led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, proposes significant changes that matter for U.S. global strategy.
Senior Pentagon officials are weighing reducing the number of combatant commands and creating new centralized headquarters, a shift that could see traditional regional hubs like U.S. Central Command and U.S. European Command reorganized under broader authorities. The moves would reflect a broader Trump administration strategy to move military focus and resources away from the Middle East and Europe and toward other theaters.
Under the plan, the Pentagon would cut combatant commands from 11 to eight and stand-up units such as “U.S. International Command” to oversee multiple regions. This is part of a larger push by Hegseth to streamline top military leadership and reduce the number of four-star generals.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pushing back, saying the administration has not provided detailed strategic, cost and operational analyses required before such sweeping change. Some Republicans and Democrats alike are concerned the reorganization could weaken U.S. regional responsiveness.
“These kinds of changes need full transparency and scrutiny,” one bipartisan member of the Senate Armed Services Committee said, underscoring Congress’ oversight role.
This debate comes as the House passed a defense authorization bill aimed at bolstering NATO and European defense commitments, a move that contrasts with elements of the Pentagon shift.
The question now is whether the Pentagon will deliver its full proposal to Congress and how lawmakers will use that information to shape or constrain the plan.
The next major development will be the formal release of the Pentagon’s Unified Command Plan for public and congressional review.
