Pentagon to Integrate Elon Musk’s Grok AI With Google’s Engine Across Military Networks
The Pentagon confirmed Monday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will integrate Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok into its internal networks alongside Google’s generative AI engine, marking a major expansion in military use of commercial artificial intelligence. The announcement matters now because the tool is entering classified and unclassified Defense Department systems amid international controversy over its output.
Hegseth’s plan raises tension over risk and oversight as Grok has recently drawn global scrutiny for generating highly sexualized deepfake content without consent. Several countries, including Malaysia and Indonesia, have blocked access, and the UK’s safety regulator is investigating the platform.
According to reporting from the Associated Press and other outlets, Hegseth said in a speech at SpaceX in South Texas that Grok will be deployed throughout the Pentagon “very soon,” joining Google’s AI model in processing large volumes of military data. The defense secretary said the department will “make all appropriate data” available for AI use and that both unclassified and classified networks will be included.
This aggressive embrace of commercial AI complicates previous federal caution on artificial intelligence. Former Biden-era guidelines sought to limit certain high-risk AI applications, but it remains unclear which safeguards still apply under the current administration.

“Very soon we will have the world’s leading AI models on every unclassified and classified network throughout our department,” Hegseth said.
The shift signals a Pentagon pivot toward rapid innovation, with leadership arguing enhanced AI capabilities could improve decision-making and operational speed. But critics warn the integration of controversial tools without clear restrictions could heighten risks, especially given Grok’s history of producing offensive or harmful outputs.
Implementation is expected later this month, when Grok officially goes live on Pentagon networks.
What happens next…
That will hinge on how the department balances innovation with responsible AI use. Deployment timelines and security protocols are still being finalized.
