Photos Renew Scrutiny After Discoloration Appears on Both of Trump’s Hands
Recent photographs of Donald Trump have renewed public scrutiny of the president’s health after visible discoloration appeared on both of his hands during late December appearances.
The discussion intensified after journalist Aaron Rupar shared a Christmas Eve image showing apparent bruising or darkened areas on Trump’s right hand. Days later, a December 28 photograph published by Agence France-Presse and distributed via Getty Images showed similar discoloration on Trump’s left hand as he held a phone.
The White House has previously addressed similar concerns, attributing the marks to frequent handshaking combined with aspirin use, which can thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising. No new official medical explanation has been issued following the most recent photos.
Medical experts interviewed by outlets including STAT News have noted that such discoloration can be common in older adults. Conditions frequently cited include senile purpura — a harmless age-related bruising caused by thinning skin — and chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory issue that can cause blood pooling and discoloration in the extremities. Experts cautioned that photographs alone are insufficient to diagnose any condition.

Trump, 79, is among the oldest presidents in U.S. history. He underwent a publicly disclosed physical examination in April 2025 and an MRI in October, with his physician at the time stating the president was in “excellent health,” though detailed results were not released. Polling throughout 2025 has consistently shown that roughly two-thirds of voters believe Trump’s age may affect his job performance.
Images showing bruising or bandage-like coverings on Trump’s hands have surfaced intermittently since at least 2020, including throughout the 2024 and 2025 campaign periods, according to archived photographs published by Newsweek and other outlets.
Social media reaction to the latest images has been polarized. Critics have questioned the White House explanation and called for greater transparency, while supporters argue the attention reflects normal aging and media exaggeration. Some online speculation has suggested unverified medical treatments or conditions, but no evidence supporting those claims has been confirmed by medical professionals or the administration.
As of now, the White House has not announced plans to issue additional health disclosures related to the photographs. The debate continues amid broader discussions over presidential age, transparency, and fitness for office as Trump remains at the center of the national political spotlight.
