Politico Under Fire After Quietly Pulling Fact-Check Mid-Interview on Trump

The interview, conducted by Politico’s Dasha Burns and released Monday, included a moment where Trump accused the publication of being “extremely unfriendly” and claimed it had been kept afloat by “$8 million from the Obama administration.” There is no evidence Politico ever received government grants or subsidies.
In the version of the transcript first posted, Politico inserted an editor’s note clarifying that Trump appeared to be referring to government subscriptions to Politico Pro — subscriptions the Trump administration later canceled as part of a cost-cutting effort. The note made clear that the outlet did not receive federal funding.
Shortly after publication, that fact-check disappeared. The transcript was updated with the note removed and no explanation provided for the change.
The unusual edit comes as Trump continues escalating attacks on major media outlets while seeking to discredit unfavorable coverage. Politico has not issued a statement explaining why the fact-check was initially added and later withdrawn.
