Poll Collapse: JD Vance’s Lead Craters as Trump Jr. Charges Into Second Place for 2028 GOP Primary
Fresh polling shows the 2028 Republican field tightening sharply, with Donald Trump Jr. cutting JD Vance’s lead in half and emerging as a serious potential challenger to the sitting vice president.

A new McLaughlin & Associates poll conducted Nov. 17–24 shows Vance leading with 34%, while Trump Jr. sits at 24%, narrowing the gap to just 10 points. The same pollster showed Vance up by roughly 20 points in August, signaling a months-long decline in his support.
The latest numbers were first reported by Newsweek, which noted that the poll tests a hypothetical 2028 matchup, as neither Vance nor Trump Jr. has formally announced a run. Still, the trend has raised eyebrows among Republican strategists who long assumed Vance would be the party’s heir apparent.
Trump Jr.’s rise mirrors a steady uptick in his favorability within MAGA-aligned voter blocs. Meanwhile, Vance’s numbers have slipped several points since October, continuing what multiple outlets describe as a downward trend.
However, not all polls tell the same story. A separate YouGov survey taken earlier in November found Vance at 42% and Trump Jr. at just 13%, underscoring how volatile early-cycle polling remains and how much results vary based on methodology and sample.
Despite the inconsistencies, analysts agree the new McLaughlin numbers suggest Trump Jr. is gaining traction — and that the 2028 GOP primary may not be the coronation for Vance many once expected.
With the Republican field still unsettled and the political environment shifting week to week, the tightening margin sets the stage for a potentially bruising and unpredictable fight for the post-Trump GOP.
