Pope Leo Rejects Trump Clash, Declares “No Interest” in Iran War Debate
Pope Leo XIV says he is not trying to debate Donald Trump over the Iran war, as tensions between the two continue to draw global attention.
The remark follows a week of escalating rhetoric, after Trump publicly criticized the pope and framed his peace message as opposition to U.S. policy.
According to the Associated Press, Leo told reporters aboard his flight from Cameroon to Angola that it is “not in my interest at all” to debate the U.S. president, emphasizing his message is rooted in the Gospel, not politics.
But the situation has grown more complicated as Trump escalated his attacks, calling the pope “weak” and mischaracterizing his stance on Iran, according to reporting from The Guardian.

“It is not in my interest at all to debate the president,” Leo said during the flight.
The clash is unfolding against the backdrop of the ongoing Iran conflict, which has already triggered military escalation and international concern, raising the stakes beyond a typical political dispute.
The divide is also spilling into the U.S., where American Catholics are increasingly split over the conflict between political loyalty and church leadership, according to multiple reports.
For now, the pope says he will continue preaching peace while avoiding direct confrontation, even as the broader feud shows no clear sign of cooling.
