Pope Warns of ‘Irreparable Abyss’ If US, Israel Continue Strikes on Iran
Pope Leo XIV has publicly appealed for peace amid ongoing U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, urging President Donald Trump and other leaders to abandon military threats and return to diplomatic talks.
According to The Independent and OSV News, the Pope spoke at the Vatican on March 1, expressing deep concern over spiraling violence and warning it could plunge the Middle East into an “irreparable abyss.” He said lasting stability cannot be achieved through weapons and threats but only through “reasonable, sincere and responsible dialogue.”
The plea comes after a significant escalation in hostilities following U.S.–Israel strikes that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, sparking retaliatory actions and widespread regional instability.
Pope Leo’s intervention adds to global calls for diplomacy and raises questions about future conflict escalation or negotiations.
