Pulitzer Board Seeks Trump’s Tax, Medical and Psychological Records in Defamation Discovery
A legal twist in President Donald Trump’s long-running defamation suit could put some of his most private records in play but it hasn’t yet been ordered by a judge. In court filings made public this month in Florida, lawyers for the Pulitzer Prize Board have demanded Trump produce years of tax returns, financial documents, and his full medical and psychological records as part of the discovery process in the lawsuit he filed in 2022.
The demand escalates an already contentious legal battle, raising the stakes for Trump just as the case enters its evidence-gathering phase. The president’s team alleges the Pulitzer Board defamed him by standing by its 2018 National Reporting awards to The New York Times and The Washington Post.
Court papers from December 11 outline the board’s first set of requests, which include medical and psychological records, any prescription medication histories, and extensive financial documentation dating back to 2015 but these are requests from the defendant’s attorneys, not a judicial order compelling production.

Legal experts say such broad discovery is not unusual when a plaintiff claims reputational or personal harm, but whether Trump challenges the request or seeks a protective order remains to be seen. “Just like any other plaintiff, the president must articulate and prove his claims with evidence,” a Pulitzer Board spokesperson told a news outlet.
Whats next…
The outcome could shape not just how this case unfolds, but how public figures can defend reputation while protecting personal privacy. Trump’s legal team is expected to file a response in the coming weeks.
