Randy Fine Files Bill to Let Trump Annex Greenland, Push for 51st State Status
A controversial bill introduced by Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) would authorize President Donald Trump to pursue the annexation of Greenland and begin the process to make it the United States’ 51st state, a move with global diplomatic consequences.
The proposal has sparked tensions between U.S. lawmakers and NATO allies, as Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark and its leaders reject any takeover. Danish officials have warned that forced acquisition talk could strain alliances.
According to Fine’s press release, the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act allows the president to take “steps necessary” to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland as U.S. territory, then requires a report to Congress on federal law changes for statehood.
Yet critics note the bill is unlikely to advance in Congress and could disrupt long-standing diplomatic relationships. Danish and Greenlandic authorities insist Greenland’s destiny must be decided by its people.

“Greenland is not a distant outpost we can afford to ignore,” Fine said, stressing strategic importance.
The bill underscores intensified U.S. focus on Arctic security and competition with China and Russia.
In response, a bipartisan delegation is planning a visit to Denmark to reassure allies and emphasize respect for sovereignty.
Supporters argue the bill aligns U.S. interests with Arctic security; opponents call it diplomatically dangerous.
Next steps include committee referral and hearings in the House with a full floor vote unlikely this session.
