Raskin Accuses Kristi Noem of $220M “Self-Promoting” DHS Media Contracts
Rep. Jamie Raskin confronted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a tense House oversight hearing Wednesday, accusing her of spending massive sums of taxpayer money on media contracts and government aircraft while leading the Department of Homeland Security.
The exchange focused on a controversial $220 million DHS advertising campaign that prominently featured Noem, which critics say resembled political promotion rather than government messaging.
According to reporting from Bloomberg Government and the New York Post, lawmakers from both parties have questioned the procurement process and the role of companies with ties to Noem’s political network.

Raskin also raised concerns about DHS spending on government aircraft, including two Gulfstream G700 jets costing about $172 million, purchased through Coast Guard procurement channels.
Democrats argue the spending reflects misplaced priorities inside DHS as immigration enforcement operations expand and the department faces funding disputes.
The controversy extends beyond the hearing. Previous reporting from the Washington Post confirmed that Noem has also been living in a Coast Guard residence typically reserved for the service’s commandant.
Noem and DHS officials have defended the decisions, saying the advertising campaign and aircraft purchases support operational needs and long-term cost savings.
The clash underscored growing congressional scrutiny of DHS spending and contracting under Noem’s leadership.
