Rep. Massie Claims FBI May Have Arrested Wrong Suspect in Jan. 6 Pipe Bomb Case
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said this week that he believes federal authorities may have arrested the wrong person in the long-running investigation into the pipe bombs planted near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters ahead of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.
In a detailed thread posted Thursday on X, Massie said he received information from what he described as a third whistleblower — a current or former government employee — raising concerns about the arrest of Brian J. Cole Jr., who was taken into custody by the FBI earlier this month.
Cole was arrested on December 4, 2025, and charged with multiple federal offenses related to the two unexploded pipe bombs discovered in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021. The devices prompted evacuations near both party headquarters but did not detonate. The case remained unsolved for nearly five years.
According to Massie, the whistleblower and several neighbors described Cole as socially isolated, detached, and largely disengaged from activities outside his home. Massie said the suspect was frequently observed walking a dog in his neighborhood, rarely interacting with others, and appearing uninterested in current events or surrounding activity.
Massie also raised concerns that Cole’s perceived vulnerability could make him susceptible to providing unreliable or coerced confessions, though no public details of any confession have been released. He emphasized that these descriptions were based on secondhand observations relayed to him and were not medical diagnoses.
The Kentucky lawmaker further questioned FBI operational decisions during the arrest, noting that neighbors were reportedly not evacuated during the search of Cole’s home and were instead instructed to remain inside. Massie suggested that such precautions appeared inconsistent with what would be expected if authorities believed the suspect had been actively constructing or stockpiling explosive devices.
In his posts, Massie said his personal conclusion — based on whistleblower disclosures and neighborhood observations — is that Cole does not appear capable or motivated to have planned and executed the pipe bomb plot on his own.
The FBI and Department of Justice have not publicly responded to Massie’s claims and have maintained that the evidence supports Cole’s arrest. The criminal case remains ongoing.
Massie has previously criticized the FBI’s handling of the January 6 pipe bomb investigation and has called for greater transparency surrounding the case.
