Republican Chris Madel Ends Minnesota Governor Bid, Blasts GOP Over ‘Retribution’
Republican Chris Madel announced he is ending his campaign for Minnesota governor, saying he can no longer support what he called the national GOP’s “retribution” toward citizens of the state.
The move sharply highlights rising tension in the Republican Party over how federal immigration enforcement is being conducted in Minnesota, especially after recent ICE operations and shootings that have drawn national scrutiny.
According to his video announcement, Madel said he initially backed the original stated goals of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Operation Metro Surge — targeting undocumented immigrants with serious criminal records — but that the effort has “expanded far beyond its stated focus on true public safety threats.”
He added that “United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear” and that people feel they must carry papers to prove citizenship, calling that “wrong.”
“I cannot support the national Republicans’ stated retribution on the citizens of our state,” Madel said in the message, making clear his break with the party’s leadership.

His exit matters because it underlines internal GOP divisions over how to respond to aggressive federal enforcement actions and could influence other Republican primary voters and candidates.
Other Republicans have largely backed the Trump administration’s policies, but some have begun distancing themselves amid controversy.
Madel had been considered a contender in a wide GOP field after launching his campaign Dec. 1, rising in early straw polls among activists.
Now, Minnesota Republicans will regroup — with the primary field narrowing and debate intensifying over how to balance public safety, immigration policy and civil liberties.
What happens next will include how remaining GOP candidates position themselves on enforcement and whether this exit affects voter sentiment in the fall election.
