Ron DeSantis Faces GOP Resistance Over Plan to Eliminate Property Taxes
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is struggling to secure legislative backing for his plan to eliminate homestead property taxes, a proposal that remains unfinished despite months of pressure.
The issue is now facing internal resistance as lawmakers pursue competing alternatives, leaving the governor without a unified path forward.
According to the Miami Herald, DeSantis has not released a detailed proposal for a constitutional amendment, and the issue is not included in an upcoming special session agenda. The Florida House has advanced partial tax-cut measures, but the Senate has yet to act.
That split has created uncertainty over whether any proposal will reach voters, especially as multiple plans compete instead of consolidating around one approach.

“If you want to have an exemption from that tax for your homestead, you’re going to have an opportunity to do that,” DeSantis said at a recent press conference.
The stakes are significant. Property taxes fund core local services, and analysts estimate eliminating them could remove up to tens of billions of dollars from city and county budgets, forcing difficult decisions on schools, public safety, and infrastructure.
For now, lawmakers are continuing to debate alternatives while the governor signals his plan is still coming, but not immediately.
The timeline for any final proposal, and whether it can gain enough support, remains unclear.
