Rubio Faces New Scrutiny After Epstein Email Claims He Bankrolled Steele Dossier Work
A viral claim tied to the latest Epstein document dump is circulating in Washington, after social media users shared a screenshot of a purported 2017 email in which Jeffrey Epstein alleged that “rubio” was the original funder behind work associated with the Steele dossier.
The stakes are obvious: if the claim were substantiated, it would collide with years of bitter partisan arguments over who funded the Trump-Russia opposition research and why it mattered.
What’s confirmed right now is the underlying document release and the nature of the online claim. The Justice Department has released more than three million pages related to Epstein, prompting backlash from survivors’ attorneys and Democratic lawmakers over redactions and privacy.
What is not confirmed is that the screenshot establishes Rubio financed anything. The circulating post points to an alleged Oct. 26, 2017 message from Epstein to author Michael Wolff, but the screenshot on its own does not show full context, authentication details, or corroborating financial records.

“The DOJ stated it coordinated with victims’ attorneys and created a dedicated email address to address redaction mistakes,” attorneys said as the release drew scrutiny.
Separate from Epstein’s alleged claim, the best-documented public record on dossier-related funding is older: reporting in 2017 said The Washington Free Beacon first hired Fusion GPS during the 2016 GOP primary, tied to donor Paul Singer, while the later Steele dossier work was funded through Democratic-aligned channels.
Rubio previously denied involvement when those funding details were reported, and no new, widely verified evidence has emerged from the Epstein release showing he personally paid for the Steele project.
What happens next will hinge on whether reporters or officials publish the full email record with verifiable provenance and whether any supporting documentation backs the allegation beyond Epstein’s words.
