Russian Security Forces Raid Novaya Gazeta, Detain Journalist in Moscow Crackdown
Masked security agents raided a leading independent newspaper in Moscow and detained one of its journalists, escalating concerns about press freedom in Russia.
According to Reuters, officers searched the offices of Novaya Gazeta and arrested investigative reporter Oleg Roldugin, with state media citing alleged misuse of personal data as the reason.
The raid quickly raised questions about transparency and due process.
Novaya Gazeta said masked agents blocked lawyers from entering the building during the search, while video showed Roldugin being escorted away by officers.
The detention also comes amid sensitive reporting. Reuters reported Roldugin had recently worked on investigations involving property linked to a Chechen leader’s associate.
At the same time, Russian authorities moved against other civil society targets.
Russia’s Supreme Court labeled the Nobel Prize-winning human rights group Memorial as “extremist” the same day, effectively criminalizing its activities inside the country.

“This is part of a broader crackdown on independent journalism and dissent,” Reuters reported.
The incident fits a longer pattern. Since 2022, Russia has intensified restrictions on media, including arrests, “foreign agent” labels, and forced shutdowns of independent outlets.
Novaya Gazeta has faced repeated pressure, with multiple journalists killed or attacked over the past two decades, including high-profile assassinations tied to investigative reporting.
The charges against Roldugin remain unclear, and authorities have not publicly detailed the evidence.
What happens next will likely depend on whether the case proceeds formally or becomes another flashpoint in Russia’s widening crackdown on dissent.
For now, the newsroom remains under scrutiny.
