Salt Lake City Mayor Vows to Stop ICE Detention Facility After Landowners Reject Sale
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall confirmed she will oppose any plan for an ICE detention facility in the city and sharply criticized federal immigration enforcement during her recent State of the City address, saying the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement are damaging and divisive.
Her comments raised the stakes for local and state officials navigating federal immigration policy as rumors swirled about a possible detention site on the city’s west side. Rumors eased after property owners at 1197 N. 6880 West said they would not sell or lease the property to the federal government, effectively quashing immediate plans for a large detention center.
Mendenhall used the address to draw a clear line between city policy and federal enforcement tactics, describing actions taken by federal agents in Minnesota, Maine and elsewhere as “completely and utterly deplorable” and saying they create fear and erode trust in law enforcement.
She emphasized that Salt Lake City’s police department will not participate in ICE operations and that local leadership will use every tool to protect residents’ dignity and safety.

“This isn’t just about zoning restrictions,” Mendenhall said. “Such a facility has no place in this city, whether at that site or anywhere else.”
Her stance aligns with other local Democratic leaders in Utah, who have publicly opposed the idea of large detention facilities in the state and urged federal representatives to take a stand against them.
The comments also come amid ongoing debates over local authority in immigration enforcement and how cities can respond to federal actions without formal legal powers.
Public reaction has included protests and calls for stronger local protections, though the outcome of federal policy decisions remains uncertain.
What happens next will depend on federal plans and whether community leaders can influence where and how enforcement operations unfold in Utah.
