Sam Altman Calls Elon Musk’s Space Data Center Plan “Ridiculous,” Ignites AI Infrastructure Clash
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly rejected Elon Musk’s ambitious plan to build data centers in space, calling the idea “ridiculous” and saying such infrastructure won’t matter at scale this decade.
Altman raised the stakes on the future of AI infrastructure during remarks in New Delhi, framing the disagreement as a clash over where the next era of compute should live. His comments underline deep tensions between Silicon Valley’s biggest AI ambitions.
According to Times of India, Altman argued that the economics and logistics of space-based data centers don’t make sense today, especially given high launch costs and the reality of repairing or upgrading GPUs in orbit — obstacles that could keep space compute impractical for years.
Musk’s SpaceX, which recently merged his AI venture xAI into its operations, has openly pursued orbital computing, filing with the FCC to launch up to one million satellites that could support AI workloads from space — a proposal aimed at leveraging continuous solar power and avoiding Earth’s energy constraints.

“Orbital data centers are not something that’s going to matter at scale this decade,” Altman said, signaling skepticism not just about Musk’s pitch but similar efforts from other big tech players.
This disagreement matters because energy and cooling demand for ground-based AI data centers is pushing tech giants to rethink infrastructure. Musk’s supporters argue space could offer solutions, while Altman and others worry the barriers are too high right now.
Expect more debate as companies and regulators weigh the costs, risks, and feasibility of orbital AI computing. Future technical results from early prototype missions could sway the conversation dramatically.
What happens next: industry pilot projects and feasibility studies will likely shape whether Musk’s space compute vision ever becomes practical.
