Secret Service Kills Gunman at White House Checkpoint After Officers Are Fired On
A gunman who opened fire near a White House security checkpoint Saturday evening was fatally shot by Secret Service officers after pulling a weapon from a bag and firing at posted officers, according to the agency’s account reported by AP and CBS News. A bystander was also struck, though officials had not clarified whether that person was hit by the suspect’s gunfire or by return fire from officers. President Donald Trump was inside the White House and was not impacted.
AP identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best, citing a law enforcement official. District of Columbia court records cited by AP and The Guardian show Best had previously been arrested near the White House and was issued a pretrial stay-away order after a July 2025 incident.
The incident matters beyond the immediate shooting because it raises a practical security question: how someone previously barred from the White House area allegedly returned to a checkpoint and opened fire.
