Sen. Mark Kelly Warns Trump’s Execution Rhetoric Is “Dangerous” After Truth Social Posts Target Democratic Veterans
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) used a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to warn that President Trump’s latest social-media posts are crossing into dangerous territory, after Trump suggested that a group of Democratic lawmakers had engaged in “seditious behavior, punishable by DEATH.”

Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and astronaut, appeared visibly concerned as he described rising political violence — including multiple assassination attempts on the president himself — and said Trump’s choice of words carries real-world consequences.
What triggered the dispute
Earlier this week, six Democratic military-veteran lawmakers released a short video reminding U.S. service members that they are legally required to refuse unlawful orders under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
The group included:
Sen. Mark Kelly
Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO)
Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA)
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA)
Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)
Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-NH)
The video did not name Trump or reference any specific orders. It was framed as a general reminder of long-standing military law.
Trump responded on Truth Social by calling the video “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL” and reposted a message claiming the lawmakers were “traitors” who should face punishment “up to and including DEATH.”
He also amplified a supporter’s post saying: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”
Kelly: Trump’s words can trigger real-world violence
On Morning Joe, Kelly said the president’s rhetoric could place lawmakers and their families in danger.
“My family has suffered from political violence,” Kelly said, citing the 2011 assassination attempt on his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords. “We have rising political violence in this country. Even the president — two assassination attempts. He should understand that his words have significant weight with the American people, and people react to things that he says.”
Kelly also referenced the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, warning that leaders must cool tensions rather than inflame them.
“Now his instinct is to call for our execution,” Kelly said. “This kind of language is dangerous and it’s wrong.”
Democratic leaders call Trump’s posts a threat
Senior Democrats — including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — have publicly condemned the president’s posts and reported them to Capitol Police.
The six lawmakers featured in the video issued a joint statement saying Trump had escalated the situation by suggesting execution as a penalty for publicly restating military law.
Republican reaction has been mixed
House Speaker Mike Johnson initially said Democrats should not be telling troops to “defy” the president but later added that he does not believe the lawmakers’ conduct is “punishable by death.”
The White House press office pushed back on criticism, arguing Trump was “talking about the law” and not literally calling for executions.
Kelly says the danger is real
Kelly stopped short of discussing specific security steps but said it would be “irresponsible” not to take threats seriously.
He closed his interview by urging Americans to reject political violence in all forms.
“We can disagree on policy,” he said. “But we cannot normalize this kind of rhetoric.”
