Senate Advances Iran War Powers Resolution as Cassidy Switches Sides
The Senate voted 50-47 to advance a war powers resolution aimed at forcing President Donald Trump to seek congressional authorization for continued U.S. military involvement in Iran or withdraw U.S. forces.
The vote marked a rare bipartisan challenge to Trump’s war policy. Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy joined Sens. Rand Paul, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski in supporting the measure, while Democratic Sen. John Fetterman opposed it.

The resolution still faces major hurdles, including the Republican-controlled House and a likely Trump veto if it reaches his desk.
The economic stakes are significant. Continued conflict around Iran can pressure oil markets, gasoline prices and inflation expectations, especially because the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints.
