Speaker Mike Johnson Deflects Question on Putin’s Nomination to Peace Board by Trump
Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Mike Johnson sidestepped a direct response when pressed about President Donald Trump’s controversial nomination of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the newly announced “Board of Peace” for Gaza.
A video circulating on social media shows a reporter asking Johnson — who is abroad on diplomatic engagements — whether he recognizes Russia as a threat while pointing to Trump’s reported move to invite Putin to the board overseeing Gaza’s ceasefire plan. Johnson answered simply that he hasn’t dug into the details of that and that it’s “not within our purview,” adding he was not the one to answer the details.
Trump’s peace board has been positioned as a U.S.-led forum to help implement a ceasefire and guide post-war governance in Gaza. Russia’s Kremlin said it has received an invitation through diplomatic channels and is studying it, but has not formally accepted the seat or clarified its intentions.
Johnson’s response reflects his broader diplomatic role this week, including remarks in London affirming that the U.S. and Britain can work through differences on global issues.

When asked, Johnson did not express concern or endorse the idea of Putin’s inclusion, instead framing the topic as outside his current agenda and expertise. That came as international debate intensifies over whether the peace board — and who sits on it — might undercut traditional multilateral mechanisms like the U.N.
Critics argue that inviting Putin, whose forces remain engaged in the war in Ukraine, could undercut credibility in peace efforts. Supporters of the board see broad engagement by global leaders as essential to long-term stability.
Johnson’s brief refusal to engage on the Putin question leaves unanswered how top U.S. lawmakers view Russia’s potential involvement in a peace initiative tied to the Middle East.
The next development to watch is whether Putin formally accepts the invitation and how Congress and allied governments respond to that decision.
