Speaker Mike Johnson Says No Evidence Ilhan Omar Staged Town Hall Attack After Trump Claim
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Thursday he has seen no evidence that Representative Ilhan Omar staged the attack on her at a Minneapolis town hall — contradicting a claim made by former President Donald Trump without supporting proof.
The comments came as political tensions are mounting over rising threats against lawmakers and inflammatory rhetoric from national leaders ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
On Jan. 27 in Minneapolis, a man rushed the stage at Omar’s town hall and sprayed her with a brown-colored liquid from a syringe before being tackled by security and arrested. The FBI is now leading the investigation into the incident, and authorities have charged the 55-year-old suspect with multiple offenses, including assaulting a federal official.
The attack followed a period of intense debate over federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, where Omar had been voicing criticism of Homeland Security policies. Instead of condemning the violence, former President Trump publicly dismissed the incident and suggested — again without evidence — that Omar may have staged the attack herself.

Speaker Johnson, asked about Trump’s comments, said he has not seen any proof of staging and emphasized that member security is being taken seriously.
“It’s important we stick to facts and not feed misinformation,” a Johnson aide said, underscoring concerns about political rhetoric fueling real-world threats. The larger issue of threats and violence against elected officials has drawn bipartisan concern in recent weeks.
Omar has publicly rejected Trump’s staging claim and linked the assault to broader threats she faces, calling for accountability and increased protection.
As investigators continue to examine the case, lawmakers on both sides are watching whether the rhetoric from national figures will ease or escalate in coming days.
