Supreme Court Forces $166B Tariff Refunds—But Workers Get Nothing Back
The U.S. has started refunding up to $166 billion in Trump-era tariffs—but most Americans won’t see a dollar back.
The refunds follow a Supreme Court ruling that found the tariffs were imposed illegally, according to Reuters and AP News. Businesses can now file claims through a new federal system, with payments expected within 60 to 90 days.
More than 330,000 importers are eligible after paying tariffs on 53 million shipments. But there’s a catch.
Only the companies that directly paid the tariffs qualify for refunds, even though economists say much of the cost was passed on to consumers through higher prices, according to Axios.

Some companies have said they may return money to customers or lower prices. Others have made no such commitment.
That leaves a growing gap between who paid upfront and who actually gets reimbursed.
For many working-class households, the higher prices remain—with no clear path to recovery.
