Texas Governor Tricked by Fake War Clip Amid Misinformation Surge
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott mistakenly shared video game footage on X believing it showed real U.S.–Iran combat, before deleting it. The clip, originally posted by another user and captioned as an Iranian plane being shot down, came from the WWII–style game War Thunder — not any actual military engagement, according to social platform context flags.
Abbott responded to the post with “Bye bye,” a caption that suggested he thought it showed a successful strike, but later removed the message once the error was clear.
The platform’s “Readers added context” tag explained the footage was simulated, noting the U.S. Navy doesn’t operate battleships the way the clip depicted.
Separately, Abbott issued an official statement backing U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, and directed increased patrols by the Texas National Guard and DPS at critical sites amid fears of retaliation.
