The Authoritarian Playbook: How Nationalism Fuels Misogyny and Hate
As authoritarianism rises, women, LGBTQ+ people, and marginalized groups are the first targets. History warns us—will we listen?
There’s a pattern to this. It’s not new. Every time nationalism surges, misogyny and hate speech rise with it, like cockroaches crawling out of the walls. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the authoritarian playbook. And it’s happening right now, in real-time.
Across the globe, leaders from Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin to Narendra Modi are using the same tired formula: push nationalism, attack women and minorities, and silence dissent. This isn’t just about policy; it’s about control. And thanks to social media, their message is spreading faster and more effectively than ever before.
If history tells us anything, it’s that this road leads to something worse. The question is: can we stop it before it’s too late?

Nationalism Needs an Enemy—And It Always Starts With Women and Marginalized Groups
Authoritarianism thrives on control. It wants rigid hierarchies, not equality. It sees women, LGBTQ+ people, and racial minorities as threats to its carefully curated illusion of strength and order.
📌 Look at the numbers: In India, anti-minority hate speech surged by 74% in 2024, a direct result of Modi’s nationalist election campaign. In Russia, Putin has systematically erased LGBTQ+ rights under the guise of protecting "traditional values." And in the U.S., Trump’s second term is already rolling back DEI, LGBTQ+ protections, and reproductive rights following the rise in misogyny and hate speech in his first term.
This isn’t a side effect—it’s the point.
📌 History repeats itself: Franco’s Spain, Nazi Germany, and Mussolini’s Italy all followed the same pattern. Women were forced out of public life and into "traditional" roles. Minorities became scapegoats. Dissenters were punished.
Nationalism is obsessed with purity—racial purity, gender roles, moral superiority. When a leader starts preaching about the "decline of traditional values," you should pay attention. Because what they mean is: we’re coming for your rights next.
The Manosphere Is a Recruitment Pipeline for the Far Right
The modern authoritarian movement isn’t just about politics; it’s cultural. And the biggest gateway to radicalization? Misogyny.
The "manosphere"—a toxic online network of incels, red-pillers, and far-right influencers—has become a pipeline to nationalism. Young men, angry about their place in the world, are being fed a steady diet of content blaming women, feminists, and diversity for their problems.
It starts with misogyny, but it doesn’t end there.
📌 What starts as "Women should be submissive" turns into:
❌ "Feminists ruined society."
❌ "LGBTQ+ people are a threat to children."
❌ "Immigrants are replacing us."
By the time they reach full-blown nationalism, they’ve already been conditioned to see democracy itself as the enemy.
Sound familiar? It should. The Buffalo shooter, the Christchurch mosque shooter, and countless others were radicalized in these exact online spaces.
🔴 Trump and his allies know this. They use the same language, play into the same fears, and weaponize the same grievances. When Trump-appointed officials say things like "DEI is anti-American" or "Trans women aren’t real women," they’re sending a signal. A green light. Keep going.
Social Media Is Pouring Gasoline on the Fire
Hate speech isn’t just rising—it’s being amplified.
Social media platforms prioritize outrage. The angrier the post, the more engagement it gets. The more engagement it gets, the more it spreads.
📌 Look at the data: In the six months following Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter (now X), hate speech skyrocketed:
Anti-Black slurs increased by 202%.
Anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech rose by 58%.
Misogynistic tweets increased by 33%.
These platforms don’t just allow hate; they profit from it. Extremists, nationalist leaders, and far-right influencers have weaponized this system to spread their agenda faster than ever before.
How Do We Fight Back?
We’re not powerless. Authoritarianism depends on people being silent. History shows that resistance works—when it’s strategic.
🔹 Expose the playbook. The more people understand the pattern, the less effective it becomes.
🔹 Push for accountability. Demand social media regulation that holds platforms responsible for hate speech amplification.
🔹 Stop the pipeline. Educate young men about how online misogyny leads to far-right radicalization.
🔹 Protect marginalized communities. Support women’s rights organizations, LGBTQ+ groups, and racial justice movements.
🔹 Don’t disengage. They want you to feel hopeless. That’s how they win.
This isn’t just politics. It’s a fight for democracy itself. And if we don’t push back now, we might not get another chance.
