The Gulf of America: How Distraction Politics Keep Screwing Us Over
While the powerful rename bodies of water, regular Americans are drowning in real problems. Let’s talk about who’s really benefiting from all this noise.
The Gulf of Distraction
On January 7, 2025, Donald Trump announced his bold new idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, he declared that the change was “appropriate” because the United States does “most of the work” in the region. Whatever that means. Not to be outdone in the theater of absurdity, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene quickly signaled her support, vowing to introduce legislation to make the name change official.
For a country facing skyrocketing rent, record grocery prices, and healthcare costs that can bankrupt a family overnight, this kind of stunt raises an obvious question: What does this have to do with the price of eggs?
Spoiler: Absolutely nothing.
This isn’t a serious proposal. It’s not even a particularly creative distraction. But it is the perfect symbol of how today’s political class operates. While Americans struggle with actual problems, the people in power keep us arguing about nonsense.
Why the Gulf? Why Now?
Let’s get something straight: This is not about geography. Trump doesn’t care about the Gulf of Mexico. Hell, he probably couldn’t even find it on a map without help from his aides and a Sharpie. This is about ego. It’s about slapping an “America First” bumper sticker on a body of water so his base can cheer and feel like they’ve “won” something.
And here’s the thing—Trump’s reasoning is as absurd as the proposal itself. He says the U.S. does “most of the work” in the region. Most of the work doing what? Polluting it? Ignoring climate change? Propping up oil companies that profit off Gulf Coast resources while local communities get left with the cleanup bill? Sure, let’s rename it. How about “The Gulf of Corporate Greed”?
But the timing here is no accident. Trump and Greene are trotting out this ridiculous idea because they know exactly what they’re doing: Distracting you.
The Art of Distraction Politics
Distraction is the oldest trick in the political playbook. When things are bad—and let’s be honest, things are very bad for a lot of Americans—the people in power need you looking somewhere else.
Wages have been stagnant for decades, healthcare costs are spiraling out of control, and eggs now cost as much as a fancy cocktail. If you’re struggling, it’s not because you’re lazy or bad with money. It’s because the system is rigged against you. But instead of fixing that system, politicians give you shiny objects like the “Gulf of America” to fight over.
Think about it: Every time there’s a crisis, they pull out a new distraction.
People can’t afford rent? Let’s argue about critical race theory.
Your healthcare premiums just doubled? Here’s a bill banning drag shows.
Eggs are a luxury item now? How about we rename the Gulf of Mexico?
These aren’t solutions. They’re decoys. While you’re busy debating maps and culture wars, the real work of government—fixing roads, lowering costs, regulating corporations—gets ignored.
Who’s Really Benefiting?
Here’s the thing about distractions: They’re not just random chaos. They serve a purpose, and that purpose is to protect the people at the top of the food chain.
While we’re out here debating whether the Gulf should be renamed, billionaires are laughing all the way to the bank. They’re the ones funding politicians like Trump and Greene. They’re the ones who benefit when the public’s attention is diverted from real issues like corporate tax breaks, environmental deregulation, and the looting of public resources.
These distractions are designed to keep us divided. If we’re too busy fighting over nonsense, we won’t unite to demand things like fair wages, affordable housing, and universal healthcare. And that’s exactly how they want it.
What Does This Have to Do with the Price of Eggs?
The average American doesn’t care what we call the Gulf of Mexico. They care about whether they can afford to feed their family. They care about whether they’ll be able to retire before they die. They care about why their landlord just raised the rent for the third time this year.
But those aren’t the conversations the powerful want us to have. They don’t want us talking about inflation, corporate greed, or the obscene wealth gap in this country. They want us arguing over the name of a body of water. Because as long as we’re distracted, they can keep screwing us over without anyone noticing.
The Bigger Problem: A Broken System
The Gulf of Mexico isn’t the problem. It’s just a symptom of a political system that’s broken by design.
In a functioning democracy, our leaders would be focused on solving real problems. They’d be raising wages, taxing billionaires, and fixing crumbling infrastructure. But we don’t live in that kind of democracy. We live in a system where money rules everything.
Trump and Greene aren’t interested in fixing the system. They’re part of the system. They thrive on division and chaos because it keeps them in power. And they know that as long as we’re arguing about maps and culture wars, we won’t notice how badly the system is failing us.
Where Do We Go From Here?
Here’s the harsh truth: Nothing changes unless we demand it. And demanding change starts with refusing to play their game.
We need to stop falling for these distractions. The next time a politician tries to sell you on some ridiculous symbolic gesture, ask them a simple question: What does this have to do with the price of eggs?
If they can’t answer that question, they’re not working for you. They’re working for the people who don’t want you to afford those eggs—or rent, or healthcare, or a decent retirement.
It’s time to focus on the real issues. Because the people in power sure as hell won’t do it for us.
The Gulf Between Us and Them
The truth is, there already is a “Gulf of America.” It’s the gulf between the people in power and the rest of us. And while they’re busy renaming oceans, we’re busy trying to survive.
So don’t let them distract you. Don’t let them divide you. And most importantly, don’t let them off the hook. Because until we close that gulf—until we fix the system—they’ll keep renaming the map while the rest of us drown.
It’s time to ask the hard questions. And it’s time to demand real answers.

We need to pay attention to which politicians are trying to distract us with stupid shit like invading Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
