The New Jim Crow: Trump’s Voter Suppression Plan
From Poll Taxes To Proof of Citizenship: The Same Old Dirty Tactics
Trump’s latest move isn’t just another assault on voting rights. It’s a deliberate, multi-pronged attack designed to strip away the right to vote from anyone who doesn’t fit the “right” profile.
On March 25, 2025, Trump signed an executive order titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.” But make no mistake — this isn’t about election integrity. It’s about election control. The order requires proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, demands that all mail-in ballots be received by Election Day, and gives the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) authority to examine voter rolls and purge so-called “noncitizens.”
And what’s DOGE’s purpose, again? Supposedly, streamlining government efficiency and cutting bureaucratic waste. Not investigating voter rolls. Not stripping away people’s right to vote. And their record of accuracy is oh so reassuring. But Trump doesn’t care about that. He’s turning a cost-cutting agency into a weapon aimed directly at the ballot box.
The executive order isn’t the only weapon in this assault. It’s just one piece of a broader strategy that includes reintroducing the SAVE Act, an ongoing effort to privatize the Postal Service, and the slow destruction of the Voting Rights Act through the courts.
The playbook is classic: Manufacture a crisis, use it to justify discrimination, and then deny you’re doing it at all. Let’s dive in.
The Myth of Widespread Voter Fraud — The Bullshit That Just Won’t Die
The entire justification for this onslaught is built on a lie. The idea that widespread voter fraud is rampant in America is pure fan fic.
According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the rate of fraudulent votes is less than 0.0009%. Trump’s own Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity couldn’t find anything worth reporting. And even the Heritage Foundation — authors of Project 2025 and a conservative think tank desperate to prove fraud exists — could only find 24 cases of noncitizen voting over 20 years (2003–2023). That’s just over one case per year.
But here’s the trick: It doesn’t matter that the claims of fraud are bullshit. What matters is that the lie provides cover for discriminatory policies.
Trump’s executive order “solves” a problem that doesn’t exist. But that’s never been the point. The point is to make voting as difficult and inaccessible as possible for the people Trump’s administration deems “undesirable.”

The SAVE Act & Trump’s Executive Order: Poll Taxes in Disguise
We warned about the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act before, and we were called fearmongers. But here we are, with a presidential executive order echoing the exact same requirements.
The SAVE Act, reintroduced by everyone’s favorite derp Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) on January 3, 2025, demands proof of citizenship (passports, birth certificates, naturalization papers) to register to vote or update registration. And Trump’s executive order? It’s demanding the same damn thing.
And let’s not forget this is the same guy going after birthright citizenship.
The Brennan Center for Justice estimates that over 21 million U.S. citizens cannot access these documents. Think about that. These measures deliberately target:
Low-income people who can’t afford to pay for documentation.
Married women who’ve changed their names.
Naturalized citizens who may not have their paperwork easily accessible.
Elderly people and people of color who’ve faced barriers to obtaining documentation their entire lives.
Let’s call this what it is: A poll tax by another name.
If you can’t afford to pay for the documents you need to prove your citizenship, you can’t vote. It’s that simple. And it’s not some accidental consequence; it’s the entire point.
See our previous report on the SAVE Act here:
DOGE’s Mission Creep: Operation Crosscheck 2.0
Trump’s executive order gives DOGE, an agency designed to cut government waste, the authority to purge supposed “noncitizens” from voter rolls. Sounds familiar? It should. This is Operation Crosscheck 2.0.
Let’s talk numbers:
Operation Crosscheck, a Kris Kobach special, had a 99.99% false positive rate.
It flagged 35,750 voters in North Carolina’s 2012 general election alone.
Actual cases of fraud? Two.
Now, Trump is trying to use the same playbook nationally. Poorly designed data-matching systems will inevitably purge valid voters from the rolls, especially people of color with common last names. And to make things even worse? DOGE is also actively gutting the U.S. Postal Service.
Destroying the USPS While Demanding Perfection
Before stepping down, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy struck a deal with DOGE to eliminate 10,000 postal jobs and slash billions from the USPS budget. Why? To “streamline efficiency.”
Except we know what it’s actually about. By weakening the Postal Service’s ability to process mail-in ballots, Trump is making sure many ballots will miss his Election Day deadline — a deadline he set himself.
Cut the USPS, then complain about the USPS failing to deliver ballots on time. Manufacture a crisis, then blame the voters for not keeping up. It’s all part of the plan.
Taxation Without Representation: The American Hypocrisy
America loves to preach about “No taxation without representation.” But what happens when the government actively blocks certain people from being represented? Trump’s “election integrity” measures are nothing more than modern-day poll taxes designed to keep the electorate as small and white as possible.
Green Card Holders:
More than 13 million lawful permanent residents live in the U.S., paying taxes, contributing to the economy, and following the law. But they have zero representation in federal elections.
Residents of U.S. Territories:
Over 3.5 million Americans — living in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands — pay federal taxes and live under U.S. laws. Yet, they can’t vote for President and have only non-voting delegates in Congress.
People Convicted of Felonies:
In 10 states, individuals convicted of certain felonies are either permanently banned from voting or must petition the governor or another authority to restore their rights, even after completing their sentences.
These states include: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Wyoming.
Many of these individuals pay taxes, work, raise families, and follow the laws, yet they’re locked out of the democratic process for life.
And let’s be clear: Black and brown communities are disproportionately affected by felony disenfranchisement, a fact that isn’t a coincidence but a feature.
The hypocrisy couldn’t be more obvious. Trump’s administration claims to protect democracy by requiring proof of citizenship and denying mail-in ballots not received by Election Day. But at the same time, it’s perfectly content with permanently silencing millions of Americans who have already paid their debt to society.
No taxation without representation? Tell that to the millions of disenfranchised Americans whose voices are being erased.
The Supreme Court’s Open Invitation to Voter Suppression
During oral arguments for Louisiana v. Callais, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested the Voting Rights Act (VRA) might have an “expiration date.” Think about that. The court that gutted the VRA’s preclearance protections in Shelby County v. Holder (2013) now implies that protections for minority voters may no longer be necessary.
Here’s the reality: White supremacy hasn’t expired. And when Kavanaugh says the VRA has a time limit, he’s telling you exactly where this is headed.
Expected Challenges:
The good news is no one is taking this sitting down. The litigation has already begun.
Legal and Constitutional Concerns:
Federal Overreach:
The executive order’s attempt to dictate election procedures violates the Constitution’s delegation of election administration to states.
“This is a blatant power grab by the federal government. Elections have always been administered by the states, and this executive order is nothing more than a reckless attempt to seize control.” — Connecticut Attorney General William Tong
Conflict With Existing State Laws:
States that allow ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted (like Oregon) will be directly impacted by the federal mandate requiring ballots to be received by Election Day.
“This isn’t about integrity. It’s about making sure certain ballots never get counted.” — Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA)
Civil Rights & Voting Rights Organizations:
ACLU:
Preparing to challenge the executive order, particularly the proof of citizenship requirement and DOGE’s role in voter roll purges.
“This order is nothing short of a direct attack on marginalized communities. It’s voter suppression disguised as election integrity, and we will fight it every step of the way.” — Dale Ho, Director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project
League of Women Voters:
Condemning the executive order as a fundamental assault on democracy.
“This is the kind of tactic you expect from an authoritarian regime. It has no place in a democracy.” — Deborah Turner, President of the League of Women Voters
Supreme Court Legal Challenges:
The Louisiana v. Callais case may further weaken the Voting Rights Act, especially if the Court embraces Kavanaugh’s “expiration date” argument.
“If the Court decides that the Voting Rights Act’s protections are somehow ‘outdated,’ it will be nothing less than a green light for states to disenfranchise minority voters.” — Sherrilyn Ifill, former President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund
Potential Areas for Legal Challenges:
Federal Overreach: States will challenge the executive order on the grounds that it infringes on their constitutional right to oversee their own elections.
Discriminatory Impact: Civil rights organizations will likely argue that the proof of citizenship requirement and DOGE’s voter roll purges disproportionately harm marginalized communities.
Violation of the Voting Rights Act: If Louisiana v. Callais further weakens the VRA, legal battles will focus on defending what remains.
USPS Cuts & Election Day Deadline Conflict: Arguing that the deliberate weakening of the Postal Service makes the Election Day receipt mandate both unfair and unconstitutional.
Talking Points:
Your annoying uncle and that douche at work will be spewing some nonsense. Here’s how you can respond.
What To Say About Trump’s Executive Order & DOGE:
“Trump is giving DOGE a job it was never meant to do, weaponizing bureaucracy to rig elections.”
“This executive order is Operation Crosscheck on steroids. Instead of protecting democracy, it’s about silencing anyone who doesn’t fit the ‘right’ profile.”
“Demanding ballots be received by Election Day while gutting the Postal Service? That’s not incompetence. That’s sabotage.”
What To Say About The SAVE Act & Citizenship Requirements:
“If you can’t afford to pay for documents to prove your citizenship, you can’t vote. That’s a poll tax by another name.”
“Trump’s executive order is the SAVE Act in disguise. They know proof of citizenship requirements are cost-prohibitive for millions of Americans, and that’s exactly why they want them.”
“This is the same old Jim Crow playbook, just with a fresh coat of paint.”
What To Say About The Supreme Court’s “Expiration Date” Argument:
“Kavanaugh says voting rights protections are outdated while the administration is actively dismantling them. The hypocrisy is staggering.”
“White supremacy didn’t expire. And neither should the Voting Rights Act.”
“Suggesting that protections against racial discrimination are no longer necessary is like saying we’ve ‘solved’ racism. It’s a lie.”
What To Say About The Postal Service Crisis:
“Cutting 10,000 jobs and defunding USPS while demanding ballots arrive by Election Day? They’re setting the Postal Service up to fail.”
“It’s not about election integrity. It’s about ensuring people who rely on mail-in voting get shut out.”
“The Postal Service cuts are just another form of voter suppression.”
What To Say About Taxation Without Representation:
“If you pay taxes and live under U.S. laws, you should have a voice. Anything else is hypocrisy.”
“More than 13 million tax-paying residents and 3.5 million Americans in U.S. territories are being silenced. And they have the nerve to call this ‘election integrity.’”
“They only want certain people to have power. And they’ll rig the system however they can to make that happen.”

Conclusion & Call to Action: This Is A War On Voting Rights. Period.
Trump’s executive order. The SAVE Act. DOGE’s voter roll purges. The gutting of the USPS. And now, the Supreme Court’s open invitation to voter suppression.
This isn’t about integrity. It’s about power. And if we don’t fight back, they’re going to take that power by silencing millions of us.
Demand legal challenges. Push Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And don’t fall for the lie that any of this is about protecting elections. It’s about destroying democracy from the inside out.
