Seems like we really have to change the system somehow so that elections do not require donors or donations for a person to run. Or maybe everyone should have a set equal limit of spending on the election.
And no corporation is allowed to donate at all. We have to get money influence and corruption out of the election process.
Many politicians like Trump cannot be trusted. Similarly with some Supreme Court justices. They cannot be trusted because in one way or another they accept bribes and sell political favors.
While I agree with your hypothesis, until Citizen United is removed from the election funding equation, elections will continue to be unfair playing fields that capture the voting public in an uneven playing field that doesn't favor the general public.
Great informative article.

What we need are age limits for all Constitutional positions.
Much better solution to the current problem

The voters don't get a direct say in appointees: they vote for the president and trust they will choose a qualified (and not too partisan) candidate.
Congress gives appointees a yay-or-nay confirmation, so again - in theory- voters have a say through their elected representatives.
What if appointed positions such as the SCOTUS have term limits?
What if the appointed-and-confirmed positions became subject to direct election by the voters?
What if appointed officials came up for "renewal" on a regular basis?
