Thomas Massie Files FEC Paperwork Days After Ed Gallrein Primary Loss
Rep. Thomas Massie has filed federal paperwork for a possible 2028 campaign, days after losing the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein.
The filing keeps Massie’s political options open, but it does not by itself mean he has made a final decision about his next race. The FEC document is a Statement of Candidacy, a procedural move that allows a candidate to maintain campaign activity and fundraising structure.

Massie’s next move matters because his defeat marked one of the clearest examples of President Donald Trump’s power over Republican primaries. Massie had served in Congress since 2012 and built a reputation as a libertarian-leaning Republican willing to oppose party leadership on spending, surveillance, foreign aid and military intervention.
His 2026 loss turned a district race into a national test of whether a Republican can survive while repeatedly breaking with Trump. The 2028 filing suggests Massie may not be finished.
