Thomas Massie Warns Trump Has Alienated GOP Voters After Kentucky Primary Loss
Rep. Thomas Massie is turning his Kentucky primary defeat into a warning for Republicans: Donald Trump’s effort to punish dissent inside the party may help win primaries but could cost the GOP voters in November.
Massie lost the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Ed Gallrein, a Trump-backed former Navy SEAL. Unofficial Kentucky results show Gallrein winning 57,822 votes, or 55%, to Massie’s 47,539 votes, or 45%.
The defeat marked one of Trump’s clearest wins in his campaign to remove Republican critics. Massie had broken with Trump over government spending, military action involving Iran, and efforts to release Jeffrey Epstein-related Justice Department files. Reuters reported that the contest became the most expensive House primary in history, with combined spending topping $32 million.

Massie told NBC’s Meet the Press, according to The Guardian, that Trump has alienated fiscal conservatives, anti-war voters, and “Make America Healthy Again” supporters who helped Republicans win power in 2024. He warned that those voters could matter again as control of Congress is contested in the midterms.
Trump and Gallrein’s allies offered the opposite lesson: loyalty to Trump remains the strongest force in Republican primaries. AP reported that Gallrein accused Massie of abandoning Trump and the party, while Trump celebrated the defeat and called Massie a “bad guy” who deserved to lose.
The policy consequence is plain: Massie’s loss may pressure remaining House Republicans to stay aligned with Trump on spending, foreign policy, and transparency fights. But Massie’s warning points to the risk for Republicans if primary victories narrow the party’s general-election coalition.
