Thune Faces DHS Fallout as Senate Vote Fails and TSA Quits Climb Past 480
Another Senate push to reopen DHS has failed, and the fallout is now showing up in airport lines as TSA staffing keeps thinning. The vote mattered because the shutdown is no longer just a Capitol Hill fight; it is becoming a travel and security problem.
According to AP and Reuters, the shutdown has stretched on since mid-February, leaving TSA officers unpaid and pushing hundreds to quit. Reuters reported more than 480 officers had left by March 25, while AP said some airports were already seeing waits of more than four hours.
The conflict remains centered on immigration policy. AP reported Democrats want tighter limits and oversight on ICE-related operations, while Republicans argue that stance is blocking a deal to restore DHS funding.
That is why this vote keeps failing even as the practical damage grows. TSA’s senior official warned Congress that staffing shortages could force airport closures, a sign the shutdown is entering a riskier phase with no clear end yet in sight.
