Tillis Pressure Pays Off as DOJ Ends Powell Probe Before May Deadline
The Justice Department has dropped its criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, removing a key political standoff that had stalled a major economic appointment.
The probe, tied to billions in renovation costs at the Fed, became a flashpoint after Sen. Thom Tillis refused to support President Donald Trump’s nominee, Kevin Warsh, while the case remained open.
According to Reuters and Axios, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the DOJ will step aside and let the Fed’s internal watchdog continue reviewing the issue instead.

That shift appears to satisfy Tillis’ core demand, though it stops short of the congressional oversight path he previously floated.
A federal judge had already undercut the case by blocking subpoenas, raising questions about its legal footing.
Now, with Powell’s term ending in weeks, Warsh’s confirmation could move quickly.
But the broader dispute over political pressure on the Federal Reserve and its independence is far from settled.
