Times Square Protest Uses Giant Musk Effigy to Challenge Grok Before IPO
A giant inflatable effigy of Elon Musk towered over Times Square Thursday as activists attempted to draw attention to controversies surrounding Grok, the AI chatbot associated with Musk’s business empire.
The demonstration, organized by Safe AI Now (SAIN), occurred one day before SpaceX’s highly anticipated public market debut. Protesters displayed banners criticizing Grok and distributed literature warning investors about legal and reputational risks they believe could follow the AI platform.

Organizers argued that investors should pay attention to ongoing controversies involving AI-generated sexualized imagery and content moderation issues linked to Grok. Musk rejected the accusations, responding on X that the protest’s claims were “totally false.”
The demonstration reflects a growing trend in which AI-safety advocates are targeting investors, banks, and public markets rather than focusing solely on technology companies themselves. While many Times Square visitors appeared more amused than outraged, the protest generated substantial media attention because of its timing, visual impact, and connection to one of the most closely watched technology and finance stories of the year.
