Tom Homan Refuses to Answer Direct Question on $50K FBI Sting
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s border enforcement chief Tom Homan is again facing questions after declining to directly address details of a 2024 FBI undercover operation involving a reported $50,000 cash exchange.
The issue resurfaced during a January 11, 2026 interview on Meet the Press, where Homan denied wrongdoing but refused to say whether cash was present during the encounter, telling host Kristen Welker that questions about the money should be directed to the FBI.
According to previously reported accounts and congressional summaries, the FBI conducted an undercover sting in September 2024 while investigating unrelated activity in Texas. Agents posing as business executives met with Homan—then a private consultant—at a Dallas restaurant.
Investigators documented Homan accepting a takeout-style bag that was reported to contain $50,000 in cash, allegedly discussed in connection with possible immigration-related contracts should Trump return to office. Homan did not hold a government position at the time.

After Trump took office in January 2025, the Justice Department and FBI reviewed the case and closed the investigation, stating they found no prosecutable criminal conduct. No charges were filed.
Democratic lawmakers, including members of the House Judiciary Committee, continue to seek the release of any recordings from the operation and have questioned Homan’s appointment. A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit is also seeking further disclosure.
Homan has repeatedly denied accepting cash or breaking the law as scrutiny around the incident persists.
