Tom Steyer’s Political Stances Come Into Focus After Trans Athlete Defense
Tom Steyer’s defense of transgender athletes in California high school sports is adding a sharper culture-policy issue to the state’s 2026 governor’s race.
The billionaire Democratic candidate has argued that transgender students should not be excluded from school athletics, a position that aligns with California’s current approach. State education officials say California law protects students from discrimination based on sex, gender and gender identity, including equal access to athletic opportunities. The California Interscholastic Federation also says students should be able to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity.

The issue gives voters a clearer view of where Steyer stands as he campaigns on a broader platform that includes lower housing costs, higher taxes on corporations and billionaires, lower electricity bills, free education from pre-K through college, climate action, health care access, AI regulation and opposition to aggressive ICE enforcement.
For Steyer, the political test is whether his progressive platform can hold together across both affordability issues and divisive cultural debates.
