Trump Accused by Mark Kelly of Triggering ACA ‘Subsidy Cliff’ Crisis
Sen. Mark Kelly is escalating criticism of Donald Trump and Republicans as millions of Americans face rising health insurance costs tied to expiring ACA subsidies.
According to Yahoo News and social media posts attributed to Kelly, the Arizona senator claims GOP leaders “knew” premiums would spike if enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies were allowed to expire.
The subsidies, first expanded during the pandemic, officially ended in late 2025 after Congress failed to renew them, triggering what analysts call a “subsidy cliff.”
Reuters reports premiums could more than double in 2026, with enrollment already declining and millions at risk of losing coverage entirely.
Kelly has tied the outcome directly to Trump-era policy decisions, arguing the administration allowed the credits to lapse despite warnings about affordability.
However, critics note the subsidies required congressional renewal, adding complexity to assigning responsibility.
The debate is intensifying as coverage losses and cost increases begin to take effect nationwide.
