Trump Accuses Iran of Targeting 2020 Election, Links Claim to U.S. Iran Strikes
Donald Trump is facing new blowback after posting about Iran “trying to interfere” in the 2020 election while the U.S. launched strikes on Iran, effectively tying a military action to his long-running election grievance. The tension is that the post reads like a justification, but the public record doesn’t back a claim that Iran decided the 2020 result.
According to The Guardian, Trump shared a Truth Social line saying Iran tried to interfere in 2020 and 2024 “to stop Trump,” and linked to a Just the News story repeating those allegations.
Democracy Docket reported the post prompted warnings from democracy advocates about the risks of using a war narrative to escalate domestic political control.
At the same time, U.S. authorities have documented Iranian-linked election-related cyber and disinformation activity in prior cases, including a DOJ filing tied to 2020 intimidation efforts.
