Trump Accuses Stitt of “Getting It WRONG” Over Gov Ban
President Donald Trump reversed his decision to exclude Democratic governors from the annual White House Governors Dinner, restoring what the National Governors Association says has long been a bipartisan event.
The move followed reporting by The Washington Post that Trump had initially limited invitations for the February 20 meeting to Republican governors, breaking with precedent and triggering immediate backlash.
According to The Washington Post, the annual dinner and business meeting traditionally includes governors from both parties. The National Governors Association confirmed the event has historically been bipartisan.
Hours later, Trump responded on Truth Social, disputing the characterization. He said invitations were sent to “ALL Governors” except two and accused Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt of misstating the situation.
“The Invitations were sent out to all other Governors, Democrat and Republican,” Trump wrote.

In the same post, Trump said Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore were not invited. He also criticized Stitt, calling him a “RINO” and saying he “got it WRONG.”
The reversal matters because the governors’ gathering is typically viewed as one of the few remaining bipartisan traditions at the White House. A partisan exclusion would have marked a significant break and escalated tensions between state leaders and the administration.
The February 20 meeting is still scheduled to proceed, and it remains unclear how many Democratic governors plan to attend following the dispute.
For now, the White House dinner appears back on track — but not without political fallout.
