Trump Administration Faces Major Court Loss Over Immigration Benefit Freeze
A federal judge has struck down several Trump administration immigration policies that prevented people from 39 travel-ban countries from receiving decisions on asylum applications, work permits, green cards, and citizenship requests.
Chief U.S. District Judge John McConnell Jr. ruled that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services exceeded its authority and unlawfully delayed immigration benefits for applicants based largely on their nationality. The court said the policies left many people in prolonged legal uncertainty despite following existing immigration procedures.

The decision represents one of the most significant judicial setbacks for the administration’s immigration agenda this year. Immigration advocates welcomed the ruling, while administration supporters continue to argue that stricter vetting measures are necessary for national security.
The ruling also arrives amid several other immigration-related court battles involving asylum restrictions, deportation policies, and visa processing rules, underscoring how federal courts remain a major arena for challenges to administration immigration actions.
