Trump Administration Moves to Reclassify Marijuana in Major Federal Shift
The Trump administration is preparing to reclassify marijuana, with a decision potentially coming within days. The move could reshape federal drug policy and the cannabis industry at the same time.
According to Axios, officials say the administration may shift marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III as early as Wednesday, though the timeline has not been confirmed. That change would ease restrictions that have been in place for decades.
Reuters reports marijuana is currently classified alongside heroin and LSD, defined as having no accepted medical use. A Schedule III designation would acknowledge medical value and allow broader research access.
But the decision is not final. The Drug Enforcement Administration still controls the process and has not publicly confirmed when or if the change will be implemented.

“This would be one of the most significant federal changes to marijuana policy in decades,” Reuters reported.
The shift builds on years of pressure. Federal review began under the Biden administration in 2022, and Trump accelerated it with a December 2025 executive order directing agencies to act faster.
If approved, the impact could be immediate. Cannabis companies could see tax relief and expanded access to funding, while federal research barriers would drop.
For now, the timeline remains fluid as regulators weigh the final step.
