Trump Announces Seizure of Sanctioned Oil Tanker Near Venezuela
WASHINGTON — U.S. forces have seized a large oil tanker operating off the coast of Venezuela, President Donald Trump said Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in U.S. enforcement actions tied to international oil sanctions.
“We’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela — a very large tanker,” Trump said during remarks at the White House. He described the vessel as sanctioned but did not immediately provide its name, flag, or the precise location of the seizure.
U.S. officials later confirmed to multiple news outlets that the tanker was linked to sanction-evading oil transport networks operating in and around Venezuela. The ship is believed to have been moving oil connected to restricted trade routes involving Venezuela and Iran, though authorities have not publicly released documentation about the cargo.
The operation reportedly involved the U.S. Coast Guard with support from U.S. naval forces operating in the Caribbean region. It comes amid a broader surge in U.S. maritime enforcement aimed at disrupting illicit oil shipments and smuggling routes tied to sanctioned governments.
When asked what would happen to the oil aboard the seized tanker, Trump responded, “Well, we keep it, I guess,” offering no additional clarification.
Venezuela’s oil sector remains the backbone of its economy, and seizures of this scale are rare. Analysts say the action could deliver both an economic blow and a political message to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, whose government has relied on covert shipping networks to move oil despite U.S. and international sanctions.
So far, Venezuelan officials have not publicly responded to the seizure. U.S. authorities have also not released photos, legal filings, or operational details explaining the full basis for the action, leaving open questions about how the seizure will be handled under international maritime law.
More information is expected as U.S. defense and homeland security officials provide formal briefings on the operation.
