Trump Approval Stays Weak as Polls Show Americans Mostly Oppose Iran Strikes
President Trump’s job approval was struggling even before he ordered surprise U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, and polling this week shows the public is largely skeptical of both his leadership and the military action.
A YouGov/Economist poll conducted Feb. 20–23 found about 38–39% of adults approve of Trump’s overall job performance while more than 55% disapprove, one of the lowest net ratings of his second term.
With that baseline in place, fresh data released around the Iran conflict show only a minority of Americans endorsing the decision to attack. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in late February and closing March 1 found just 27% of respondents approve of the recent U.S./Israeli strikes on Iran, with 43% saying they disapprove and 29% unsure.

YouGov’s own snapshots — including a daily question and a same-day poll conducted on the weekend of the strikes — consistently show more disapproval than support of military action, with roughly mid-30s approval and low-40s disapproval.
Partisan divisions are sharp: most Democrats and independents oppose the Iran strikes and disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while a majority of Republicans continue to back the president’s choices.
“Most Americans think the administration hasn’t clearly explained its goals,” a Washington Post flash poll found in early March.

That skepticism — coupled with what are already choppy approval numbers — suggests the Iran conflict has so far failed to produce a “rally ’round the flag” bump for the president. As U.S. casualties and regional tensions continue, public opinion could shift, but the early mix of disapproval and confusion may weigh into voters’ minds ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Pollsters plan ongoing tracking in the coming weeks as the military situation and political fallout evolve.
