Trump-Backed GOP Primary Challenge Puts Sen. Bill Cassidy at Center of 2026 Midterm Fight
Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy is facing one of the toughest reelection battles of his political career as President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to reshape the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump during the former president’s second impeachment trial in 2021, is now competing in a high-stakes Louisiana Republican primary against Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow and former Rep. John Fleming.
The race has become one of the clearest national examples of Trump’s continuing influence over Republican primaries and internal GOP loyalty battles.
Trump has repeatedly criticized Cassidy publicly since the impeachment vote and endorsed Letlow earlier this year, transforming the Louisiana contest into a broader political test for Republican incumbents who broke with him after Jan. 6.

The race is also unfolding under Louisiana’s new partisan primary structure after lawmakers ended the state’s longtime jungle primary system. Political analysts say the change may favor more ideologically motivated Republican turnout while reducing crossover voting that previously benefited moderate candidates.
Polling has shown Cassidy struggling to consolidate support among Republican primary voters despite his incumbency and statewide name recognition.
The outcome could carry national implications for Senate Republicans as other incumbents monitor whether Trump-backed challengers continue gaining traction in conservative states ahead of the midterms.
If no candidate wins a majority outright, the race could move to a runoff later this year.
