Trump Blames Iran for Deadly School Strike as Pentagon Launches Probe
A deadly strike that destroyed a girls’ elementary school in southern Iran is now at the center of growing scrutiny after President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the attack while U.S. defense officials say the incident remains under investigation.
The strike killed roughly 165–175 people at the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab on Feb. 28, according to Iranian authorities and international reporting. Most of the victims were children.
The attack occurred the same day U.S. and Israeli forces launched a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, part of the rapidly escalating regional conflict, according to Reuters and Associated Press reporting.
Satellite imagery and expert analysis reviewed by journalists suggest the damage pattern is consistent with an air-delivered munition. Several officials familiar with the matter told reporters the strike may likely have been carried out by U.S. forces targeting a nearby Iranian Revolutionary Guard facility.

The Pentagon has not confirmed responsibility.
“All I can say is that we’re investigating,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said when pressed by reporters.
The school sits adjacent to a Revolutionary Guard compound and naval brigade barracks in Iran’s Hormozgan Province, a location that has been targeted during the opening phase of the military campaign, according to defense analysts.
Iran has accused the United States and Israel of responsibility and called the strike a war crime, while U.S. officials say American forces do not deliberately target civilian sites.
The United Nations and human rights organizations have demanded an independent investigation as the war expands and civilian casualties mount across the region.
The Pentagon’s review into the strike is ongoing.
