Trump Blames Iran for School Bombing That Killed 175 as Pentagon Review Begins
A deadly airstrike that destroyed a girls’ elementary school in southern Iran is drawing scrutiny after President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the attack while U.S. defense officials say the incident is still under investigation.
The strike hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab on Feb. 28, killing roughly 165–175 people, most of them children, according to Iranian authorities and international reports. According to Reuters and other outlets, the bombing happened on the first day of large-scale U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
When asked by reporters aboard Air Force One about the school attack, Trump said the strike appeared to have been carried out by Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a more cautious response, saying the Pentagon is investigating the incident and that the U.S. military does not target civilian sites.

However, early assessments reviewed by the Associated Press and other outlets suggest the damage pattern seen in satellite imagery is consistent with a U.S. airstrike. Officials familiar with the investigation have said the school sits next to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard compound, raising the possibility the military target was nearby.
The United Nations and several international organizations have called for an independent investigation.
Responsibility for the strike has not yet been officially confirmed.
