Trump Calls Iran Strikes a ‘Love Tap’ as Ceasefire Faces New Pressure in Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump said Thursday that U.S. retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets were “just a love tap” after Iranian forces targeted American destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining that the ceasefire between the two countries remains active.
The comments came after U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out “self-defense strikes” in response to Iranian missile, drone, and small boat attacks near the critical shipping route. U.S. officials said the USS Truxtun, USS Mason, and USS Rafael Peralta were targeted but not damaged.
Speaking to ABC News, Trump downplayed the latest exchange and said the ceasefire was still “in effect” despite the renewed fighting. Iranian officials accused the United States of violating truce terms and escalating tensions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important waterways because a significant share of global oil shipments pass through the corridor. Continued instability there could affect energy prices, international shipping, and broader Middle East security.
The current ceasefire has already faced repeated tests since being announced earlier this year amid ongoing disputes over naval activity, sanctions, and regional military operations.
Markets and foreign policy analysts are closely watching whether the latest exchange remains contained or develops into a broader regional escalation involving additional military action or disruptions to commercial shipping.
